19 Jan Our Christmas Holiday in Finland
Happy New Year 2017! I hope you had a good break!
As always, we spent our Christmas holiday at our cottage in Finland. When we first arrived, there was no snow. It was a huge disappointment, but that’s how it is in Southern Finland these days: no guarantee of snow. Instead, we had an amazing surprise waiting for us. The river had frozen over and, since there had been no snow, the ice was completely clear. You could actually see the water plants that were frozen inside the ice and you could see right through to the bottom of the river. Amazing! I’ve had that place for 10 years and this was the first time I’ve seen this completely clear ice. It feels a little weird to stand on the same spot where we swam just 5 months ago!
And then, after a few days, the snow fell! Not much, but enough to completely change the scenery and enable us to take the sledges out. We were so happy!
The ice, of course, was still great underneath, so we swept the snow away and created our own, private ice rink. How cool is that?
And when we needed a break, we sat on a nice warm sheep’s skin drank hot chocolate and ate Finnish buns:
You might be surprised by the idea of skating on a river. But the ice does get very thick in the winter. In fact, it gets so thick that the locals actually make a road on the ice. It saves a lot of time when you can drive directly over the river, instead of taking the long way via the roads.
Needless to say that there were some tears when we left. But we are already looking forward to the summer holidays when we can go back <3
I hope you all had a relaxing holiday and I wish you the very best for the year 2017!
